Helping residents explore their community’s BIG backyard while developing an appreciation for local natural resources is at the heart of many of the Park District’s programs and events.

One popular monthly program, Crafts with Nature, is uniquely designed to introduce some of our youngest park visitors to the nature surrounding them.

“Connecting our youngest community members to nature through hands-on exploration and crafts is the main goal of this program,” said Kayla Ferdelman, CWPD Recreation Supervisor.

Designed for children ages 18 months to 4 years old and their caregivers, Crafts with Nature features themed story times, nature-inspired crafts, games, and short hikes. Each month focuses on a different topic, helping participants discover the many ways to explore and enjoy the outdoors.

The program rotates among several parks throughout the district, often taking advantage of natural features such as trails, creeks, and nature play areas to enhance the experience.

June’s theme, “Fabulous Fungi,” had participants learn about the environments where fungi grow and thrive, enjoy an interactive story time, make their own take-home mushroom crafts, and discover sensory stations to encourage hands-on exploration and learning!

“Participants do everything with their adults, which helps caregivers learn ways to teach about nature, play with nature, and do nature-inspired projects together,” said Ferdelman.

While held during the day most months, this season’s Crafts with Nature series is being held in the evenings to take advantage of the summer weather! The next sessions will be held on July 7 and August 4. Pre-registration is required.

In 2026, the United States of America is commemorating its 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. As part of the celebration, America 250-Ohio is coordinating the unique events and experiences across Ohio’s 88 counties that play a role in crafting the state’s impact on American History. The Centerville-Washington Park District is joining the celebration by highlighting significant historical and community-building events within your park district that align with America 250-Ohio’s mission.

June’s theme is Ohio Outdoors: Exploring Ohio’s Natural Resources. Ohio’s many public resources – including state parks, campgrounds, trails, and more – offer unique opportunities for residents and visitors to explore the state’s natural terrain.
