Providing opportunities for our community to connect with the outdoors, the Centerville-Washington Park District’s BIG Backyard Party returns each summer for an afternoon full of activities for all ages and abilities. From archery to field games, and inflatables to fishing, this year’s BIG Backyard Party hosted more than 1,100 people on Saturday, July 25!
“BIG Backyard Party was absolutely wonderful,” said Katie Thorpe, CWPD Recreation Supervisor. “We had great weather and a steady flow of people.”
A grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources allowed CWPD to give away nearly 200 free fishing poles to children ages 14 and under at the event’s Passport to Fishing stations. Part of a statewide program to expand access and increase participation in recreational fishing, the Passport to Fishing program engages children to learn more about safe fish handling, tying fishing knots, identifying baits, and casting practice. After receiving their fishing pole, children and guardians took their new skills and enjoyed fishing in the pond at Oak Grove Park.
“We appreciate everyone who helped make this year’s event possible, especially our summer camp staff!” said Thorpe.
While a big part of CWPD’s summer is youth camp opportunities, BIG Backyard Party has become a staple of CWPD’s offerings, with this summer marking the event’s 10th year. With the assistance of many of the camp counselors, events like BIG Backyard Party are also possible thanks to the continued partnership of several community organizations including local Girl Scout Troops, Centerville Noon Optimists, Washington-Centerville Public Library, and Montgomery County Board Developmental Disability Services, as well as Claybourne Grille Food Truck, Travelin’ Tom’s Coffee Truck, and Kona Ice, all of which hosted activities for all to enjoy. The event also collected food donations to support The Foodbank, the primary source of food for the hunger relief network in the Miami Valley.
In 2026, the United States of America is commemorating its 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. As part of the celebration, America 250-Ohio is coordinating unique events and experiences across Ohio’s 88 counties that help shape the state’s impact on American History. The Centerville-Washington Park District is joining the celebration by highlighting significant historical and community-building events within your park district that align with America 250-Ohio’s mission. July’s theme is Ohio Gathers: Ohio’s Homecoming & Picnic. Over 200 communities throughout the state planned to come together to celebrate the state’s history and contributions to America’s history with food, fun, and friendship.
